Grom is one of Estonia’s longest‑running black metal bands, founded in 1997 in Tallinn. Their name—гром, Russian for “thunder”—captures the project’s core identity: raw, forceful, and steeped in the harshness of Eastern European black metal tradition. From the beginning, Grom embraced a cold, aggressive sound rooted in second‑wave black metal, but filtered through the bleak, militant atmosphere characteristic of the Estonian underground. Their lyrics and imagery revolve around Satanism, spiritual rebellion, and the darker aspects of human nature, delivered with an uncompromising, old‑school ethos.
The band’s earliest period (1997–2000) produced their first demo, Прах небес (2002), a lo‑fi, abrasive recording that circulated heavily in the local tape‑trading scene. This early material established Grom’s signature approach: sharp tremolo riffs, harsh vocals, and a stripped‑down, frostbitten production style. Over the years, the lineup shifted frequently, with founder Vaal Nehrist remaining the central creative force.
A decade later, Grom resurfaced with the demo Царство чумы (2012), showcasing a more mature but still fiercely traditional black‑metal sound. The riffs became more structured, the atmosphere darker and more ritualistic, while still retaining the rawness that defined their early years. This release marked the beginning of a more active phase for the band.
In 2017, Grom released the EP Возвращение древних, one of their strongest and most widely recognized works. The EP demonstrated a clearer production, more dynamic songwriting, and a deeper immersion into occult and anti‑religious themes. It solidified their reputation as a steadfast force in Estonia’s black‑metal landscape, refusing to bend toward modern trends or polished aesthetics.
Their live album Anno pestis et bellum MMXXII (2022) captured the band’s intensity on stage, highlighting their ability to translate their raw studio sound into a fierce, commanding live presence. The recording also reflected the band’s resilience and longevity, performing with the same conviction decades after their formation.
Grom continues to evolve while remaining loyal to their roots. The 2025 EP Сон Разума marks their latest chapter, offering a darker, more atmospheric approach without sacrificing the aggression and spiritual hostility that define their identity. With a history spanning nearly three decades, Grom stands as one of Estonia’s most enduring black‑metal acts—unyielding, uncompromising, and deeply embedded in the country’s extreme‑metal lineage.
