Infernal Dreams were a melodic black metal band from Amadora, Lisbon, active between 1992 and 2000, remembered for their blend of melodic black metal with atmospheric and progressive touches. Their work is defined by dream‑imagery, fantasy‑driven lyricism, and a distinctly Portuguese sense of melancholy. Their small but polished discography places them among the more refined melodic black metal acts of Portugal’s 1990s underground.

Formation and identity

The band formed in 1992 and developed a sound that merged melodic black metal with elements of death metal and progressive metal, as reflected in the genre tags associated with their 1999 album. Their thematic focus on fantasy and dreams shaped both their lyrical content and the atmospheric tone of their compositions.

Their early lineup, documented on the 1995 demo, included:

This formation established the foundation of their melodic and atmospheric approach.

Promotape ’95 (1995)

Their first release, Promotape ’95, is a two‑track demo featuring “Human Misery” and “Black (The Lost Power)”, totaling 9:20 minutes. It was independently released on cassette and recorded with the lineup above. The demo already showcased their blend of melody, aggression, and dreamlike atmosphere.

And I Dream… (1999): the definitive work

Their only full‑length album, And I Dream…, was released in December 1999 through Guardians of Metal. It is a melodic black/death metal album with progressive elements, running 43:49 minutes. The tracklist includes:

The album was recorded at Rec’n’Roll Studio and produced by the band alongside LuĂs Barros. Its style is described as melodic black/death metal with atmospheric and progressive touches, reflecting a more mature and expansive sound than the demo.

Legacy

Infernal Dreams disbanded around 2000, leaving behind a compact but well‑crafted discography. And I Dream… remains a cult release within the Portuguese underground—melodic, atmospheric, and rooted in the dreamlike, introspective themes that defined the band’s identity.
