Insepultus was founded in 1998 by Robert “Sepultus” Pieptan as a symphonic black metal project rooted in the bleak atmosphere of post‑communist southern Romania. The early era of the band, active until 2004, was defined by a raw yet ambitious approach that fused traditional black metal aggression with orchestral layers, martial rhythms, and lyrical themes centered on war, psychological trauma, occult visions, and the liminal space between life and death. During this period, Insepultus operated as a trio in its live form, though Sepultus remained the sole composer and studio performer.

The 2002 demo The Hell Will Rise Again captured the project’s early identity: harsh, cold, and driven by a fascination with destruction and transcendence. After disbanding in 2004, Insepultus remained dormant for nearly two decades.

In 2023, Sepultus resurrected the project, now based in Bucharest, and released the full‑length Deadly Gleams of Blood, Steel and Fire. The album marked a dramatic evolution in sound—more cinematic, more violent, and more deeply rooted in the psychological dimensions of war and near‑death experiences. The orchestral arrangements became more prominent, the production sharper, and the thematic focus darker and more introspective. The record re‑established Insepultus as a significant presence within Romania’s modern symphonic black metal landscape.

Today, Insepultus continues as a solo endeavor in the studio, with Sepultus handling all instruments and composition, while live performances historically featured additional musicians from the Romanian extreme metal scene.
