Juodaragis emerged in Vilnius in 1995 as part of the earliest wave of Lithuanian black metal, a period defined by raw production, pagan mysticism, and a fiercely underground ethos. The band embraced a traditional yet atmospheric form of black metal, drawing on Baltic darkness and esoteric symbolism. Their music was characterized by cold tremolo riffs, primitive drumming, and a ritualistic aura enhanced by keyboards—an uncommon feature in Lithuania’s mid‑90s scene, giving their sound a more spectral, otherworldly dimension.

Their sole known release, the 1996 demo ...and the Blackmoon Has Taken Her Majesty Sun..., circulated exclusively in tape‑trading circles and through the small but dedicated Lithuanian underground. The demo is remembered for its raw, unfiltered sound and its evocative atmosphere, blending traditional second‑wave black metal influences with a uniquely Baltic sense of mysticism. While never widely distributed, it became a minor cult artifact among collectors of early Eastern European black metal.

Juodaragis’ lineup featured musicians who would later become involved in other Lithuanian underground acts, most notably Accipiter—connected to Ars Moriendi and Menhyr—and Demogorgon, whose guitar and keyboard work contributed significantly to the band’s eerie, nocturnal tone. Despite their brief existence and limited output, Juodaragis left a small but distinct imprint on the formative years of Lithuania’s black metal movement, representing the raw, exploratory spirit of the era.
