Kõdu emerged from Tallinn in 2018 as one of the most distinctive voices in the new wave of Estonian black metal. Conceived initially as a solo‑driven project by the multi‑instrumentalist Kõdu, the band quickly established a reputation for its poetic, myth‑infused approach—melding raw black metal with folkloric atmosphere, naturalistic imagery, and a strong sense of narrative. Their music stands apart for its balance of harshness and lyricism, drawing from Estonian cultural memory while embracing a modern, expressive form of black metal.
The debut album Unusta kõik (2021) was met with strong underground acclaim, praised for its emotional depth, evocative songwriting, and the interplay between aggressive riffing and melancholic, almost ritualistic passages. Reviewers highlighted the album’s ability to merge traditional black metal ferocity with a uniquely Estonian sense of mysticism and poetic introspection. The record positioned Kõdu as a rising force within the Baltic extreme metal scene, earning attention from international listeners and eventually leading to a partnership with Antiq Records, known for supporting atmospheric and culturally rooted black metal acts.
Between 2020 and 2023, the lineup expanded and contracted as the project evolved. Samantha Surmatalv joined on guitars and later assumed vocal duties, bringing a sharper melodic sensibility and a more dynamic vocal presence. This period saw the band experimenting with richer textures, layered guitars, and a more expressive rhythmic foundation. The involvement of musicians from projects such as Ferum, Humanity, Loits (live), and SĂĽngehel added further depth and versatility.
By 2024–2026, Kõdu had solidified into a more stable formation, culminating in the release of Kirjad sõgedate kĂĽlast (2026). The album represents the band’s most mature and ambitious work to date—expansive, atmospheric, and thematically rich. It deepens their exploration of mythology and nature while incorporating more complex arrangements and a heightened emotional intensity. Early reception from underground reviewers praised its storytelling, its organic production, and its ability to evoke landscapes both physical and psychological.
Kõdu continues to stand as one of Estonia’s most compelling contemporary black metal acts—restless, poetic, and deeply rooted in the textures of myth and the natural world.
