Kolotun

Kolotun is one of the longest‑running and most quietly persistent black metal projects in Latvia, active since 2001 and rooted in Riga’s early‑2000s underground. Their trajectory is unusual: a band that released a full‑length almost immediately, then went largely silent for nearly two decades before re‑emerging with new material in the 2020s. This long arc gives Kolotun a dual identity—part relic of the early Latvian black metal scene, part survivor adapting to a new era.

Origins and early identity

Kolotun formed in 2001, during a period when Latvian black metal was still defining itself. Their early work reflects the raw, unfiltered sound of that era: cold riffing, minimalistic structures, and a focus on nature and life rather than occult or pagan themes. The band’s name and aesthetic evoke a sense of wandering, solitude, and harsh landscapes.

Their debut album, Пир во время чумы (2002), appeared quickly and captured the band’s early character: lo‑fi, atmospheric, and rooted in Eastern‑European black metal traditions. The Russian title (“Feast in Time of Plague”) hints at existential and naturalistic themes rather than ideological extremity.

Dormancy and revival

After 2002, Kolotun entered a long period of silence. No releases surfaced for nearly eighteen years, though the band remained nominally active. This gap reflects the instability of the early Riga scene—frequent lineup changes, shifting priorities, and the collapse of many contemporaries.

The revival began in 2020, when Kolotun returned with:

These releases introduced a more atmospheric, reflective sound while retaining the rawness of their origins. The band’s 2023 single Ensom Vandrer (“Lonely Wanderer”) continued this direction, leaning into a colder, more introspective Scandinavian‑influenced tone.

Musical style

Kolotun’s sound blends several elements:

The project sits somewhere between traditional black metal and atmospheric black metal, without fully committing to either pole.
