Loits is one of the most influential and internationally recognized black metal bands to emerge from Estonia, founded in 1996 by Lembetu as a solo project before evolving into a full band in 1999. From the beginning, Loits positioned itself apart from the Scandinavian‑dominated black metal landscape by embracing a distinctly Estonian identity—musically, lyrically, and visually. Their self‑defined style, “militant flak ’n’ roll,” blends black metal aggression with rock ’n’ roll swagger, martial rhythms, and a strong historical narrative rooted in Estonia’s turbulent 20th‑century past.

The term “flak ’n’ roll” was coined by writer Mart Kalvet, who suggested replacing “black metal” with “flak” (anti‑aircraft gun) to better reflect the band’s militant aesthetic. As Loits’ sound evolved, incorporating more rock‑driven elements and mid‑tempo swagger, the slogan became a defining part of their identity. Their music often explores themes of patriotism, wartime trauma, and the experiences of Estonian soldiers—particularly those of the 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, a conscripted Estonian unit deemed non‑criminal at Nuremberg. This historical focus has led to frequent mislabeling of Loits as NSBM, a claim the band has consistently rejected in interviews, emphasizing that their work deals with national history, not ideology.

Loits’ early releases, including the demos Tõelised kuningad (1999–2000), established their martial, melodic, and narrative‑driven approach. Their debut full‑length Ei kahetse midagi (2001) received strong acclaim for its powerful songwriting and its bold thematic direction. The EP Legion Estland (2003) further solidified their reputation, combining fierce black metal with anthemic, militaristic atmosphere.

Their landmark album Vere kutse kohustab (2004) is widely regarded as one of the most important Estonian metal releases of the 2000s. Critics praised its dynamic compositions, evocative storytelling, and the band’s ability to merge black metal with historical narrative in a way that felt both personal and culturally significant. Loits continued to refine their sound with Must album (2007), a darker and more introspective work that showcased their versatility and maturity.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Loits remained a central force in the Baltic metal scene, performing at major festivals, releasing EPs and compilations, and maintaining a strong visual identity rooted in historical photography, military aesthetics, and Estonian cultural symbolism. Their later releases—Raiugem ruunideks (2013), Tulisilma Sünd (2016), and the single You, That May Wither (2019)—demonstrated continued creativity and relevance.

In the 2020s, Loits entered a new era with lineup changes and renewed activity, culminating in the 2024 EP Tõelised kuningad (Kutse sügavikust) // Kiri kaevikust (Kauge laane versioon), which revisits and reinterprets earlier material with modern production and expanded arrangements. Despite decades of evolution, Loits remains committed to its core identity: a band that confronts history through sound, blending aggression, melancholy, and national memory into a uniquely Estonian form of black metal.
