Lord Wind is one of the foundational pillars of Polish pagan‑ambient and medieval folk music—a project created in 1994 by Rob Darken, best known as the architect of Graveland. While Graveland channeled warlike black‑metal fury, Lord Wind became Darken’s vessel for darkwave, folk, and medieval ritualism, drawing on ancient European myth, pagan spirituality, and the atmosphere of forgotten ages.
Across three decades, the project has evolved from solitary keyboard‑driven darkwave into a full folk ensemble featuring traditional instruments, multiple vocalists, and a distinctly archaic sound rooted in Slavic and Nordic antiquity.
Founded in Wrocław in 1994, Lord Wind began as a purely solo endeavor. Darken composed sweeping, cinematic darkwave pieces built on:
The early albums (Forgotten Songs, Heralds of Fight, Rites of the Valkyries) established a unique aesthetic: music that felt like the soundtrack to ancient battles, sacred rites, and the wandering of tribes across primordial landscapes.
By the mid‑2010s, the project transformed. Darken expanded Lord Wind into a full folk ensemble, incorporating traditional instruments and new musicians, shifting the sound toward authentic medieval folk rather than keyboard‑based darkwave.
Founder and central figure.
Handled all instruments until 2016, now focusing on mandolin and tambourine while directing the project’s artistic vision.
Vocals, santoor, jouhikko.
Her voice and instrumentation brought a new emotional and cultural depth, blending Slavic, Baltic, and Finno‑Ugric tonalities.
Violin, backing vocals.
Adds melodic richness and a strong folk identity, drawing from her work in Morhana and Watrakora.
Hurdy‑gurdy.
Introduces a droning, archaic texture central to medieval folk traditions.
Drums.
A veteran of Perunwit and other pagan‑folk projects, grounding the ensemble with ritualistic percussion.
Together, this lineup transformed Lord Wind into a living folk ensemble capable of performing medieval‑inspired music with authenticity and emotional resonance.
These works are atmospheric, keyboard‑driven, and cinematic—evoking ancient battles, mythic landscapes, and pagan rites.
This period embraces traditional instruments, layered vocals, and a more organic medieval folk sound.
The Forest Is My Kingdom stands as the definitive statement of this era—ritualistic, melodic, and deeply rooted in pagan spirituality.
Lord Wind’s music is shaped by:
The project’s atmosphere is both majestic and mournful, evoking the weight of history and the spirit of ancient Europe.
Lord Wind remains one of the most influential pagan‑folk projects in Poland and beyond.
Its evolution from solitary darkwave to full medieval ensemble reflects Darken’s long‑term artistic vision: to resurrect the sound of ancient Europe through ritual, melody, and myth.
Still active, the project continues to stand as a bridge between the atmospheric traditions of the 1990s and the modern revival of historical folk music.
