Mantle was formed in Vilnius in 2022 as an atmospheric black metal project deeply rooted in Baltic paganism, natural mysticism, and Lithuanian mythological tradition. Their sound blended raw black metal textures with expansive, melodic passages and a strong sense of folkloric atmosphere. Mantle’s music emphasized mood and storytelling, drawing from the forests, rituals, and ancestral memory of Lithuania. Even in its earliest form, the project carried a distinctly local identity, merging harshness with meditative, nature‑bound ambience.
The debut EP Valley Solitudinem (2022) introduced Mantle’s sonic world: slow‑building, atmospheric compositions shaped by layered guitars, distant vocals, and a sense of wandering through ancient landscapes. The release resonated within Lithuania’s growing atmospheric black metal scene for its sincerity and its grounding in cultural heritage.
In 2023, Mantle released their only full‑length under that name, Krivio sapnai—a title referencing the dreams or visions of a krivis, a Baltic pagan priest. The album expanded their thematic and musical scope, weaving together mythological symbolism, ritualistic rhythms, and melancholic melodies. It marked a significant step forward in songwriting depth and conceptual cohesion, positioning Mantle as a promising new force in the Lithuanian atmospheric black metal movement.
Later in 2023, the band underwent a transformation, adopting the new name Pagirnis and continuing their musical path with a clearer identity and refined artistic direction. While Mantle as a name ceased, its spirit and aesthetic foundations live on in Pagirnis, making the early releases an essential prologue to the band’s evolving legacy.
