Morana is a long‑running Slovenian melodic death/folk metal band formed in 2006 in Kranj, named after the Slavic goddess of death and winter. Their music blends melodic death metal riffing with folk‑inspired melodies, dual‑vocal interplay, and lyrical themes rooted in paganism, folklore, and the darker cycles of nature. Over the years, Morana have become a recognizable presence in the Slovenian underground, known for their emotional songwriting, strong melodic sensibility, and the interplay between harsh and clean vocals.

Their debut full‑length Too Bad for Heavens (2012) remains their only official release, but it captures the essence of their sound: energetic guitar work, atmospheric keyboards, and a balance between aggression and folk‑tinged melancholy. The album’s themes revolve around death, mythic storytelling, and the tension between the earthly and the spiritual. While rooted in melodic death metal, the band’s use of keyboards and dual vocals gives their music a distinctly folk‑metal character.

Morana’s lineup has evolved significantly since their early years, with numerous changes in the guitar and drum sections. The addition of Nina on vocals in 2016 brought a new dynamic to the band, introducing a melodic and emotional counterpoint to Tomo’s harsher vocal style. Their later period also saw the inclusion of members active in other Slovenian metal projects, strengthening their ties to the broader scene.

Although Morana have not released a follow‑up album since 2012, they remain active, performing live and continuing to refine their sound. Their music sits at the intersection of melodic death metal, folk influences, and pagan themes—an approach that has kept them relevant within Slovenia’s diverse metal landscape.
