Must Missa is one of the defining names of Estonia’s early extreme metal underground—a band that began as a raw, Viking‑themed black metal act in the late 1990s and gradually mutated into a vicious, alcohol‑soaked black/thrash machine. Formed in Kilingi‑Nõmme in 1996 before later relocating to Tallinn, Must Missa embodied the chaotic, DIY spirit of the era: fast, hostile, irreverent, and utterly unconcerned with polish. Their name, meaning “black mass” in Estonian, captured the band’s early aesthetic—primitive, occult‑tinged, and steeped in northern aggression.

The band’s early years were marked by a cold, riff‑driven black metal sound with lyrical themes centered on Viking warfare and ancient battles. This period produced their first demo, Sex Beyond the Grave (2001), and the raw, uncompromising full‑length Ma ei talu valgust (2004). As the lineup shifted and new influences seeped in, Must Missa’s sound evolved dramatically. By the mid‑2000s, the band had embraced a harsher, thrash‑infused approach—faster tempos, sharper riffing, and lyrics steeped in hatred, violence, and alcohol‑fueled nihilism.

This transformation culminated in a string of releases that defined their later identity: Goat of Sin (2004), The Target of Hate (2005), Pure Hate (2006), and Martyr of Wrath (2007). These records showcased a band fully committed to black/thrash extremity—raw, abrasive, and unapologetically hostile. Their live performances during this era were notorious for their intensity and unpredictability, cementing Must Missa as a cult favorite within Estonia’s underground.

The band’s lineup was a revolving door of musicians deeply embedded in the Estonian scene, including members of Tharaphita, Manatark, Sorts, Dawn of Gehenna, and numerous other regional acts. This constant cross‑pollination shaped Must Missa’s sound and contributed to its evolution. The core of the band’s later years consisted of Viking, Suss, and Anc, whose chemistry defined the group’s final phase.

Must Missa quietly dissolved in 2008, leaving behind a compact but influential discography. Their unexpected posthumous release, Live in Tallinn (2024), resurfaced as a document of the band’s feral energy and a reminder of their place in Estonia’s extreme metal lineage.
