Obscenus were a raw and hostile black metal act from Luxembourg, active from 1998 and rooted firmly in the country’s early wave of extreme underground projects. Their sound embraced the most abrasive elements of traditional black metal—cold, treble‑heavy riffing, primitive drumming and a vocal approach steeped in hatred and misanthropy. Lyrically, the band explored themes of death, religious contempt, darkness and human degradation, aligning themselves with the uncompromising ethos of the late‑90s European black metal underground.

The band’s only known release, Occulti Aven Elsisath (2004), is a demo that captured Obscenus at their most feral. The recording is characterized by harsh, buzzing guitars, relentless rhythmic patterns and a suffocating atmosphere that leans heavily into occult darkness. The production is intentionally raw, preserving the immediacy and violence of the band’s rehearsal‑room origins. The demo circulated in limited quantities, becoming a minor cult item among collectors of obscure Luxembourgish black metal.

Obscenus was driven by two musicians deeply embedded in the region’s extreme metal network. “I” handled vocals, guitars, bass and drums, shaping the band’s core identity with a solitary, misanthropic vision. His work in other underground projects—Donkelheet, Hellhorde, Proelium—reflected the interconnected nature of Luxembourg’s black metal scene. Drummer II contributed additional rhythmic force, bringing experience from acts such as Elite, Hell, Misanthropic Nihilist and Stormthrone of Dripping Blood. Together, they forged a sound that was both primitive and intensely personal, rooted in hatred and spiritual darkness.

Although Obscenus produced only one known recording before fading into obscurity, the project remains a notable fragment of Luxembourg’s extreme metal history. Their work stands as a testament to the raw, uncompromising spirit that defined the country’s underground in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
