Owls Woods Graves is a Kraków‑based black metal force formed in 2015, built around a volatile fusion of black metal, melodic hardcore, and the abrasive, confrontational spirit that defines much of the modern Polish underground. From the beginning, the band has been driven by the creative partnership between The Fall and E.V.T., both deeply embedded in the Kraków extreme metal scene and known for their work with projects such as Mgła, Medico Peste, Whalesong, and Over the Voids…. Their approach blends the cold, riff‑centric discipline of Polish black metal with the urgency and rhythmic punch of hardcore, resulting in a sound that is aggressive, swaggering, and steeped in themes of Satanism, anti‑Christianity, and occult paranoia.
The band’s self‑titled EP (2016) introduced this hybrid identity with sharp, punk‑inflected riffing and a raw, hostile atmosphere. Critics and underground listeners immediately noted the project’s refusal to conform to either traditional black metal orthodoxy or the more polished tendencies of post‑black metal. Instead, Owls Woods Graves carved out a space defined by violence, speed, and a sense of ritualistic chaos.
Their first full‑length, Citizenship of the Abyss (2019), solidified their reputation. Reviews praised its relentless pacing, venomous vocal delivery, and the way it channeled the spirit of early black metal through a modern, hardcore‑charged lens. The album’s lyrical focus on spiritual decay, demonic sovereignty, and the collapse of moral order aligned it with the darker philosophical currents of the Polish scene.
With Secret Spies of the Horned Patrician (2022), the band expanded their sound into even more dynamic territory. The record was widely regarded as a major step forward—more melodic in places, more violent in others, and structurally more ambitious. The Fall’s shift from drums to full‑time vocals, combined with E.V.T.’s sharpened guitar work, gave the album a commanding presence. Critics highlighted its balance between feral aggression and memorable songwriting, as well as its sardonic, anti‑clerical tone.
The lineup evolved again in 2022 with the arrival of drummer Prof. K, whose background in Moonstone and other projects brought a heavier, more precise rhythmic backbone. In 2024, M.D. joined on bass and backing vocals, reinforcing the band’s live and studio power.
Recent releases show no sign of slowing. The 2025 single The Flag Is Raised hinted at a more anthemic, warlike direction, while the full‑length Strix (2025) has been received as one of their most focused and venomous works—dark, fast, and steeped in occult hostility. Early reactions from zines and listeners emphasize its sharpened production, its ritualistic atmosphere, and its seamless fusion of black metal ferocity with hardcore immediacy.
Owls Woods Graves remains one of the most distinctive and uncompromising acts in contemporary Polish black metal: aggressive, iconoclastic, and driven by musicians whose experience across the KrakĂłw scene gives the project both depth and authority. Their work continues to evolve while retaining the raw, rebellious spirit that defined them from the beginning.
