Pagansarv is a modern force within the Põlva black metal lineage—a project that emerged in 2021 but carries the unmistakable DNA of South‑Estonian pagan black metal. Rooted in the forests and folklore of Põlva County, the band channels a raw, melodic, and ritualistic approach that feels both contemporary and deeply ancestral. Their music is steeped in pagan themes, drawing on local myth, seasonal cycles, and the stark natural atmosphere of southeastern Estonia.

The project is driven musically by Argoth, a veteran of the Estonian underground whose rĂ©sumĂ© spans some of the region’s most influential extreme metal acts. His work in Worse than Failure, Project Massacre, Spellbinder, Realm of Carnivora, Urt, Must Missa, and Hord gives Pagansarv a foundation of experience and stylistic depth. Here, however, Argoth turns fully toward pagan black metal—icy riffs, melodic undercurrents, and a sense of ritualistic purpose.

Vocals are handled by Pimedus, another figure deeply embedded in the Põlva–Võru axis of Estonian black metal. Known for his work in Urt and earlier involvement in Ăśrgsiug and Realm of Carnivora, Pimedus brings a harsh, commanding vocal presence that complements Argoth’s instrumentation. Together, the duo creates a sound that is both raw and atmospheric, rooted in tradition yet sharpened by modern production sensibilities.

Pagansarv’s debut full‑length Kaarnakarva (2021) introduced the project with a strong sense of identity—melodic, pagan, and evocative of Estonia’s deep forest mysticism. The 2022 single Siga hinted at a harsher, more aggressive edge, while the upcoming 2025 album Pööriööl promises to expand the project’s thematic and musical scope. The title, referencing solstice night, suggests a work steeped in ritual, darkness, and the turning of the year.

Despite being a relatively new project, Pagansarv has already carved out a distinct place in the Estonian scene: a bridge between the old pagan black metal tradition and a new generation of musicians carrying that flame forward.
