Pagirnis is one of the most striking new voices in Lithuania’s atmospheric black metal resurgence—a project rooted in Baltic spirituality, mythic imagination, and the natural landscapes that shape the region’s cultural memory. Emerging in 2022 under the name Mantle, the band re‑formed as Pagirnis in 2023, aligning its identity more closely with Lithuanian pagan tradition. Their music blends sweeping atmospheric black metal with folk‑inflected melodies, ritualistic rhythms, and lyrical themes drawn from ancient cosmology, animistic worldviews, and the symbolic language of forests, giants, and sacred fire.
Their debut full‑length Krivio sapnai (2023) immediately positioned Pagirnis as a serious force. The album’s title—“Dreams of the krivis,” the Baltic pagan priest—signals its conceptual depth. The record weaves tremolo‑driven black metal with spacious, melodic passages and a sense of spiritual yearning. It was followed the same year by the EP Valley Solitudinem, a more introspective work that expanded the band’s atmospheric palette and showcased their ability to balance aggression with meditative calm.
In 2024, Pagirnis released their second full‑length, Kai milĹľinai gyveno (“When the Giants Lived”), a work steeped in Lithuanian mythic prehistory. The album explores the era of primordial beings—giants, spirits, and ancestral forces—through expansive compositions that merge black metal ferocity with cinematic, folk‑tinged ambience. This release solidified their partnership with Dangus Productions, Lithuania’s leading pagan/folk/ritual label, placing Pagirnis in the lineage of culturally significant Baltic acts.
Musically, Pagirnis stands at the intersection of atmospheric black metal and Baltic folk mysticism: layered guitars, distant screams, ritual percussion, and melodic lines that echo traditional Lithuanian intonations. Their work is both modern and deeply rooted in heritage, carrying forward the spirit of bands like Obtest, Andaja, and Ha Lela while carving out a distinctly contemporary voice.
