Proelium—Latin for “battle”—was a fierce and uncompromising black metal project from Luxembourg, founded in 1995 as a side‑project by two members of Donkelheet. While the band remained deeply underground, Proelium carved out a distinct identity through a raw, war‑driven form of black metal steeped in hatred, darkness and primitive aggression. Their music embraced the harshest elements of the second‑wave tradition, favoring cold, treble‑heavy riffing, relentless drumming and a vocal approach rooted in pure hostility.

The band recorded five demo tapes during their existence, though only three were ever released. Their earliest known output, Call of the Wolf (1996), captured Proelium’s sound in its most feral state: buzzing guitars, pounding percussion and a bleak, war‑obsessed atmosphere. The demo’s lo‑fi production and violent energy aligned the band with the rawest corners of the European black metal underground. Circulating primarily through tape‑trading networks, it became a minor cult artifact among collectors of obscure Luxembourgish metal.

Proelium’s lineup centered around two musicians who were already deeply embedded in the region’s extreme metal scene. Doudesgaard handled guitars, bass, drums and vocals, shaping the project’s core identity with a solitary, misanthropic vision. His work in Donkelheet, Hellhorde and Obscenus reflected the interconnected nature of Luxembourg’s underground. Azrael Azrake, who tragically passed away in 1996, contributed bass and drums during the band’s early period and was also active in Donkelheet. His involvement added to the project’s raw, violent edge and cemented Proelium’s place within the tightly knit network of Luxembourgish black metal musicians.

Although Proelium eventually dissolved and much of their recorded material remains unreleased or lost, the project stands as a significant fragment of Luxembourg’s early extreme metal history. Their work embodies the war‑driven, hateful and primitive spirit that defined the country’s underground in the mid‑1990s.
