Shadow Season took form in Stavanger in 2001 as a melodic black metal project combining Norwegian and Irish members, shaping a sound rooted in sharp riffing, surreal atmospheres, and a distinctly early‑2000s sense of melodic intensity. Their music leaned toward a cleaner, more structured approach than the rawer strands of the genre, using melody and mood to evoke the dreamlike, disorienting qualities suggested by their thematic focus on surrealism. Though their activity remained limited and their later status uncertain, the band captured a precise moment in the Norwegian underground where melodic black metal was expanding into more expressive and atmospheric territory.

Their sole release, the The Frozen EP (2003), stands as the clearest expression of this vision—cold, melodic, and marked by a surreal, drifting tone that set them apart from their contemporaries. Despite a brief lifespan, Shadow Season left behind a small but distinctive imprint, defined by the interplay between melodic clarity and the strange, dream‑warped sensibility at the heart of their work.
