Sõjaruun (“War Rune”) is one of the defining pillars of the Põlva black‑metal lineage—a project forged in 2007 by three musicians whose creative DNA is woven deeply into South‑Estonia’s extreme‑metal history. Their sound is unmistakably regional: cold, pagan, militant, and rooted in the darker strata of Estonian folklore. Where many pagan black‑metal bands lean toward epic or heroic tones, Sõjaruun embraces something more feral and earth‑bound—ritualistic rhythms, harsh vocals, and a sense of rural dread that feels carved from the soil of Võrumaa and Põlvamaa.

Their debut EP Sõjaruun (2008) and the split with Odal (2009) established the band’s identity: raw, aggressive, and steeped in ancestral memory. The first full‑length Org (2009) remains a cornerstone of their discography—icy riffs, pounding drums, and a lyrical focus on pagan resistance and the violence of history. The 2010 EP Talv (“Winter”) sharpened their atmospheric edge, while the later single and album Tusk (2017 / 2018) showed a matured, heavier, and more deliberate approach.

Sõjaruun’s music is tightly bound to the Põlva–Võru creative axis, where musicians often collaborate across multiple projects. The band’s lineup reflects this:

This triad gives Sõjaruun a rare stability—three musicians with decades of shared history, each bringing a distinct creative force.

The band’s compilation appearances further anchor them in the Estonian underground. Their track “Ă„lve” appeared on Iut de Asken (2009), and in 2016 they contributed “Oskar Ruut” to Trench Art – A Tribute to Loits, paying homage to one of Estonia’s most influential pagan‑metal acts.

Today, Sõjaruun remains active, consistent, and deeply rooted in the traditions that shaped them. Their sound hasn’t softened or modernized—it has simply grown more focused, more atmospheric, and more aligned with the dark folklore that defines their identity.
