Spirituality emerged in the late 1990s from MarijampolÄ—, Lithuania, formed by two ex‑members of the local death metal act Interrupter together with a newly recruited guitarist. Active during a period when the Lithuanian underground was still largely undocumented and fiercely DIY, the band embodied the raw, hostile edge typical of the region’s early death/black metal hybrids. Their music—known primarily through their lone 1998 demo—was characterized by harsh, primitive riffing, aggressive pacing, and a distinctly anti‑religious lyrical stance, aligning them with the darker, more confrontational Baltic underground of the era. Although their recorded output was minimal, Spirituality is remembered as part of the tight‑knit MarijampolÄ— scene that produced several obscure but influential local acts. Their sound carried remnants of Interrupter’s old‑school death metal roots, but with a sharper blackened edge and a more caustic vocal delivery. The band’s existence was brief, and like many Lithuanian underground projects of the 1990s, they operated independently, leaving behind only a single demo and scattered mentions in scene archives. The death of vocalist/drummer RiÄŤardas Sutkus in 2018 further cemented the group’s legacy as a short‑lived but authentic expression of Lithuania’s early extreme metal movement.
