Sulphuric Night is one of the central pillars of the Bosnian Black Plague Circle, a collective of raw, uncompromising black metal projects known for their hostile atmosphere, esoteric symbolism, and fiercely underground ethos. Formed in 2013 in Sarajevo, the project is the creation of the multi‑instrumentalist known simply as O., whose vast network of associated acts has shaped much of the modern Bosnian and Balkan black metal landscape. Sulphuric Night stands out within this constellation for its evolution from occult, night‑obsessed raw black metal into a colder, more nihilistic and sharpened form.

The earliest recordings—Rehearsal Demo (2013) and Endless Night (2014)—captured the project at its most primitive: harsh, spectral riffs drenched in reverb, distant shrieks, and a nocturnal atmosphere reminiscent of early LLN and Eastern European raw black metal. The 2014 split Of Infinite Cold Wanderings... expanded this aesthetic, establishing Sulphuric Night as a key presence in the emerging Black Plague Circle.

With Scorpio Acuelum (2015) and Last Wound (2016), the project began refining its sound, introducing more structured songwriting while retaining the abrasive, frostbitten production that defined its early years. These demos circulated widely in tape‑trading circles and helped solidify the project’s cult reputation.

The 2019 full‑length Forever Cursed marked a major turning point. Darker, more focused, and thematically rooted in nihilism, the album showcased O.’s ability to craft immersive, emotionally devastating black metal without sacrificing rawness. Its atmosphere—icy, oppressive, and ritualistic—earned praise from underground reviewers and collectors, who often cite it as one of the strongest releases to emerge from the Bosnian scene in the late 2010s.

Subsequent releases, including the 2020 split Death Slumbers Amidst the Ruins and the 2021 collaboration with Borda’s Rope, continued to expand the project’s sonic palette. By the time Black Metal Tyranny appeared in 2023, Sulphuric Night had fully embraced a sharpened, militant form of raw black metal—cold, relentless, and stripped of all ornamentation. The project’s contribution to 10 Years of Devotion (Altare Productions, 2023) further cemented its status within the international underground.

Throughout its existence, Sulphuric Night has remained fiercely independent, releasing material through small distros and maintaining a strict anti‑commercial stance. Its connection to the Black Plague Circle—alongside Obskuritatem, Void Prayer, Niteris, Vrač, and others—places it within one of the most influential raw black metal movements of the last decade.
