Vari emerged in 2004 during a period when Tallinn’s underground was experimenting with hybrid forms—raw black metal on one side, and keyboard‑driven, melodic, symphonic textures on the other. Vari belonged firmly to the latter: a short‑lived project that leaned into dramatic keyboards, dual‑vocal interplay, and a melodic sensibility that set them apart from the harsher, more war‑oriented bands of the era.

Their output was small but distinctive. The 2004 demo Vihavald introduced their symphonic style—icy keyboards, layered guitars, and a theatrical vocal approach. The 2005 single No Life continued in the same vein, showing a band that was refining its melodic identity but ultimately disappeared before producing a full‑length.

Vari’s only known compilation appearance, “Manalateel” on Hauatagused Karjed Vol.2 (2005), places them within the early Hexenreich‑era Estonian underground—raw, DIY, and interconnected, even when the music leaned toward the symphonic.

The lineup was small and stable, consisting of two multi‑instrumentalists who handled all core duties.

Vari is one of those fleeting early‑2000s Tallinn projects that left only a small footprint but helps map the diversity of the era—showing that even within a predominantly raw and pagan‑leaning national scene, there were pockets of musicians exploring symphonic and melodic black‑metal textures.
