Varmia is a black/folk metal project from Olsztyn, founded in 2016 and deeply rooted in the pagan heritage, landscape, and spiritual identity of the historical region of Warmia. Their music merges raw black metal with traditional folk instrumentation, ritualistic rhythms, and a strong sense of place—evoking forests, ancient rites, and the pre‑Christian worldview of northern Poland. Varmia’s sound is defined by its organic, earthy character: distorted guitars intertwined with lyre, talharpa, goat horn, wooden tubes, and primal percussion, all performed with a live, unpolished intensity that emphasizes authenticity over studio perfection.
The band is led by Lasota, whose vocals, guitars, and lyre form the creative core of Varmia. His vision blends black metal ferocity with folk mysticism, crafting music that feels both ancient and immediate. Over the years, the lineup has evolved, with musicians contributing a wide array of traditional instruments and ritual percussion. Since 2021, Jan Gralla has expanded the band’s sonic palette with talharpa, goat horn, and other folk instruments, reinforcing the project’s ritualistic dimension. The current rhythm section—bassist Deiv and drummer Jakub Wieczerzycki—brings a powerful, modern backbone to the band’s evolving sound.
Varmia’s discography reflects a steady artistic ascent. Their debut Z mar twych (2017) introduced their raw, pagan black metal foundation, followed by W ciele nie (2018), which deepened their atmospheric and ritualistic approach. With Bal Lada (2021), the band reached a new level of refinement, blending aggression and folk ambience into a cohesive, immersive whole. Subsequent releases—including the Prolog EP (2023) and the full‑length Nie nas widzę (2023)—showcase a band continually expanding its emotional and sonic range. Singles such as “Daina 4,” “Agre,” and “Dies Tremor” highlight their ability to shift between trance‑like folk passages and intense black metal eruptions.
Their contribution “Bielmo” to Five Years of Heavy and Metal (2022) further cemented their presence on the international stage, while upcoming works like Zwykli zmarli (2025) and Lauks (2026) signal a continuation of their ritualistic, pagan‑infused journey.
Varmia stands as one of the most distinctive voices in modern Polish black/folk metal—an act that channels regional identity, ancestral memory, and raw emotional force into music that feels both timeless and fiercely alive.
