Zmajkamen emerged from Resen as one of the most enigmatic and unconventional black metal projects in North Macedonia. Named after the peak “Zmajkamen” on the GaliÄŤica mountain, the project embraced a deeply atmospheric and ritualistic approach, merging raw black metal with experimental structures, ambient textures, and occult‑themed soundscapes. The music was conceived and executed entirely by Igor, whose background in the underground scene (notably in Hantva) shaped the project’s uncompromising and solitary character.
From the beginning, Zmajkamen positioned itself outside traditional black metal frameworks. The project’s early demo Red (2016) introduced a sound rooted in lo‑fi black metal but infused with dissonant melodies, hypnotic repetition, and a ritualistic atmosphere. The follow‑up demo The Light Bearer (2018) expanded this direction, incorporating slower, more meditative passages and a stronger emphasis on occult symbolism. These recordings circulated primarily through underground networks, gaining attention for their raw authenticity and the project’s refusal to conform to genre expectations.
In 2019, Zmajkamen released its only full‑length album, Hymns to Darkness and Light, the culmination of Igor’s vision. The album blended harsh black metal foundations with experimental structures, ambient interludes, and a thematic focus on duality—light and darkness, life and death, earthly ritual and transcendence. Underground reviewers praised the album for its atmosphere and for capturing a uniquely Macedonian sense of mysticism tied to local landscapes and pagan folklore.
Little is known about the project’s internal history, and no official disbandment was announced. However, with no activity after 2019 and Igor’s involvement shifting to other artistic endeavors, Zmajkamen is widely regarded as inactive. Despite its brief existence, the project stands as one of the most distinctive and atmospheric contributions to the Macedonian black metal underground, merging regional mythic identity with experimental extremity.
