Ancient Sorrow is a Serbian black metal project founded in 2006 in Novi Sad, driven by a harsh, uncompromising vision rooted in misanthropy and raw emotional hostility. Emerging during a fertile period for the Serbian underground, the band quickly established itself through a series of demos that embraced the cold, abrasive aesthetics of early 2000s Eastern European black metal. Their sound is defined by sharp, unpolished riffing, cavernous vocals, and a bleak atmosphere that reflects the project’s thematic fixation on hatred, insomnia, and psychological decay.
The debut demo Blasphemy (2007) introduced Ancient Sorrow’s aggressive and primitive approach, earning attention within local circles for its intensity and unapologetically raw production. The follow‑up Soul Tormentor (2008) expanded on this foundation with darker, more oppressive songwriting, further solidifying the band’s identity as a purveyor of harsh, emotionally corrosive black metal.
In 2009, the project released Insomnia Aeternum, their most recognized demo and a defining work in their catalog. The release gained wider exposure through multiple compilation appearances, including Pest Records’ own sampler and the Invasion from the East compilation. The track “Insomnia Aeternum” became the band’s signature piece, noted for its suffocating atmosphere and relentless, anxiety‑ridden pacing. These compilations helped Ancient Sorrow reach a broader underground audience, particularly within Eastern Europe.
Despite maintaining an active status, the band eventually entered a prolonged period of inactivity, with no new releases after 2009. However, the members remained involved in the Serbian and international black metal scenes through various other projects. Ancient Sorrow’s legacy persists as a snapshot of the raw, unfiltered aggression that characterized much of the region’s underground output during the late 2000s.
