Anheim is a melodic black metal band from WĂĽrzburg, Bavaria, formed in 2020 and quickly establishing itself as one of the more promising young acts in the southern German underground. Their sound blends traditional melodic black metal riffing with a strong sense of narrative atmosphere, drawing heavily on fantasy‑driven imagery, archaic storytelling, and raw emotional intensity. While rooted in the Scandinavian melodic tradition, Anheim’s music carries a distinctly German character—sharp, dramatic, and steeped in mythic tension.

Origins & Early Formation (2020)

The band emerged during the pandemic years, initially built around the core of Raspad (bass) and Bleklys (guitars), both veterans of the Bavarian underground with backgrounds in projects ranging from melodic death to raw black metal. Their early lineup also included drummer DnL and vocalist/guitarist EzZ, whose contributions shaped the band’s first recordings.

Their debut EP Märe einer alten Zeit (2020) introduced Anheim’s aesthetic: melodic yet aggressive guitar work, harsh vocals, and a lyrical focus on ancient tales, conflict, and emotional extremity. The EP’s title—“Tale of an Old Time”—captures the band’s early fascination with mythic storytelling and the darker corners of fantasy.

Anihorim & the First Major Phase (2022)

In 2022, Anheim released their first full‑length album Anihorim, a work that solidified their identity and expanded their reach. The album is characterized by:

  • sweeping melodic leads
  • mid‑tempo black metal aggression
  • atmospheric interludes
  • a raw but cohesive production
  • lyrics steeped in fantasy, hatred, and internal conflict

Anihorim received positive underground reception for its balance of melody and harshness, and for its ability to evoke a sense of ancient worlds without relying on folk instrumentation or pagan clichĂ©s. The album’s emotional tone is colder and more violent than their debut EP, reflecting the band’s growing confidence and stylistic clarity.

Lineup Shifts & Creative Consolidation (2023–2024)

Following the release of Anihorim, Anheim underwent significant lineup changes. Vocalist/guitarist EzZ departed in 2023, leading to the arrival of Andergrout on vocals and Nefaros on guitars. This shift marked a turning point: the band’s sound became more focused, more aggressive, and more technically refined.

The compilation Alte Tage (2020–2023) served as a closing chapter for the first era of Anheim, collecting early recordings and marking the transition into a new creative phase.

During this period, the band also cycled through several live drummers—Northem, Sagittarius, T.H.Z., and Stefan Roth—reflecting the challenges of maintaining a stable lineup while continuing to perform and record.

Modern Era & New Material (2025–present)

By 2025, Anheim had stabilized with the addition of drummer Narhammer, whose background in Aeon of Awareness, Nargate, and Not for Saints brought a more forceful rhythmic backbone to the band.

The singles “Ascheschrein,” “Roter Staub,” and “Rauchopfer” showcased a darker, more atmospheric direction—still melodic, but with a heavier emphasis on tension, ritualistic imagery, and emotional violence.

These releases culminated in the 2025 full‑length Die Welt die wir begruben (“The World We Buried”), a record that represents the band’s most ambitious work to date. The album explores themes of destruction, rebirth, and the burial of old worlds—both literal and metaphorical. Musically, it blends:

  • icy melodic tremolos
  • layered guitar harmonies
  • harsh, commanding vocals
  • atmospheric passages that evoke desolation and myth

The album positions Anheim as a rising force in the German melodic black metal scene, capable of crafting music that is both emotionally evocative and technically sharp.

Identity & Legacy

Though still young, Anheim has already developed a clear artistic identity: melodic black metal rooted in fantasy, hatred, and mythic storytelling, delivered with a modern edge and a strong sense of atmosphere. Their evolving lineup has shaped their sound in distinct phases, but the core vision—melodic intensity, narrative depth, and emotional ferocity—remains constant.

With Die Welt die wir begruben, the band has entered a new era marked by stability, ambition, and a sharpened musical voice.
