Blindspot A.D. was an atmospheric grindcore/death metal band from Friedrichshafen, formed in 1994 by musicians connected to Dreaded Instinct, Hartsoeker, Poh, and Festered Inards. Emerging from the fertile mid‑90s southern German hardcore/death‑grind scene, the band fused the chaotic speed of grindcore with a darker, more atmospheric death metal sensibility. Their sound was abrasive yet textured, marked by dissonant riffing, shifting tempos, and a raw emotional undercurrent uncommon in the genre at the time.

Origins & Early Years (1994–1999)

Blindspot A.D. began with a rotating early lineup, anchored by drummer Ollie Johnscher (1994–1999). Their early work appeared primarily on splits—an essential format in the 90s underground—reflecting their close ties to the regional hardcore and grindcore community. Releases like the Blindspot A.D. / Hartsoeker split (1995) and Kalte Zeiten (1996) showcased a band still rooted in grindcore’s frantic energy but already experimenting with atmosphere and structure.

By the late 90s, the lineup had begun to stabilize around musicians who would later form or join Ira, Curbeaters, and other notable German underground acts. The Apes Would Not Ignore demo (1999) marked a turning point, presenting a more cohesive and emotionally charged sound.

Peak Creative Period (2000–2004)

The full‑length Stumme Gesichter (2000) established Blindspot A.D. as a distinctive voice in atmospheric grind/death. The album blended crushing riffs with bleak, introspective moods, setting them apart from more straightforward grindcore contemporaries.

They followed with the EP Pain Is Not the Cleanser (2001), a raw and cathartic release that further refined their hybrid style.

Their final and most acclaimed work, Knowledge vs. Fear (2003), is often regarded as their creative peak—an intense, emotionally heavy record that balanced aggression with atmosphere. The album’s reception (notably high within underground circles) cemented their legacy as one of the more forward‑thinking grind/death acts of their era.

The band’s last known release was the split Death… Never Ending Emotions / Von Akteuren und Statisten (2004), after which activity ceased.

Lineup & Legacy

Blindspot A.D.’s lineup was fluid, but the last known formation included:

  • Patrick Trieb – vocals
  • Andreas Rosczyk – guitars
  • Steve Hartmann – guitars
  • Alexander Fromm – bass
  • Thomas Klaus – drums

Many members went on to shape the German hardcore, post‑metal, and blackened scenes through bands like Ira, Curbeaters, Ultha, and Xhelat.

Identity & Influence

Blindspot A.D. is remembered for:

  • merging grindcore intensity with atmospheric death metal
  • emotionally charged, bleak sonic textures
  • strong ties to the 90s southern German hardcore/grind network
  • a discography built heavily on splits—true to underground tradition
  • members who later became influential in other German extreme metal circles

Though they never achieved mainstream recognition, their work remains a compelling artifact of a transitional moment in German extreme music, where grindcore’s chaos met the emerging emotional weight of atmospheric metal.
