Caedeous is a symphonic black metal project from Lisbon led by composer and multi‑instrumentalist Paulo J. Mendes, who serves as the creative core of the band. The project blends extreme metal, orchestral composition, and cinematic sound design, resulting in a style that is both theatrical and violent, rooted in elaborate arrangements and a dark, operatic atmosphere. Caedeous has developed a reputation for ambitious, concept‑driven releases that merge classical orchestration with black metal intensity.

Origins and musical identity

Founded in 2014, Caedeous was conceived as a vehicle for Mendes’ orchestral and extreme‑metal vision. The project’s sound is defined by:

  • Dense symphonic arrangements built from piano, choirs, and full orchestral layers.
  • Extreme metal foundations—blast beats, tremolo riffs, and harsh vocals.
  • A dramatic, narrative approach, often structured like a dark opera or soundtrack.

The lineup has evolved around Mendes, with various vocalists, guitarists, and drummers contributing across different eras. Notable collaborators include vocalists Josephine W.H, Rosmerta, and DM, as well as drummers Bruno Guilherme and Federico Leone.

Discography and evolution

Caedeous’ releases trace a clear progression from orchestral experimentation to fully realized symphonic black metal:

  • Siege of Draedemor (Single, 2017)
  • The Rise of Marion (Single, 2017)
  • Orchestral Sessions: Domini Tenebrarum (Full‑length, 2017) — an early orchestral exploration.
  • Domini Tenebrarum (Full‑length, 2018) — the first major symphonic black metal statement.
  • Obscurus Perpetua: The Tales of the Dark Prince (Single, 2021)
  • Obscurus Perpetua (Full‑length, 2022) — a “dazzling, diabolical, and disorienting” symphonic descent, praised for its theatricality and bombast.
  • Cruxis Inferni (Single, 2023)
  • Malum Supplicium (Full‑length, 2023) — released through Black Sunset, featuring a full lineup including Thomas Blanc (vocals), Rosmerta (mezzo‑soprano), Federico Leone (drums), and Douglas Melchiades (guitars).

Across these works, Caedeous has refined a sound that is increasingly elaborate, cinematic, and rooted in dark‑fantasy aesthetics.

Artistic character

Caedeous stands out for its fusion of:

  • Operatic grandeur and extreme metal ferocity
  • Narrative‑driven compositions with a strong conceptual backbone
  • High‑production orchestration, unusual for an underground project
  • International collaborations, expanding the project beyond Portugal

The result is a body of work that feels like a dark symphonic saga—ambitious, immersive, and unapologetically dramatic.
