CelephaĂŻs was founded in Augsburg in 2009 as a one‑man project dedicated to crafting immersive, instrumental black/post‑metal soundscapes. Conceived and executed entirely by CLPHS, the project takes its name from H. P. Lovecraft’s dream‑city, a fitting reference for music that leans heavily into atmosphere, introspection, and cinematic tension. Without vocals to anchor the compositions, CelephaĂŻs relies on layered guitars, expansive crescendos, and shifting textures to evoke emotion and narrative, positioning the project at the intersection of post‑metal’s slow‑burn dynamics and black metal’s ethereal melancholy.

The debut album Becoming the Deceased (2011) introduced CelephaĂŻs’ signature approach: long, flowing tracks built around evolving motifs, shimmering tremolo lines, and a sense of drifting through vast, dreamlike spaces. Underground listeners and reviewers praised the album for its emotional clarity and its ability to communicate intensity without relying on traditional black metal aggression. The follow‑up EP Tir n’a n’Og (2012) expanded on these ideas with a brighter, more melodic palette, drawing comparisons to post‑rock‑infused black metal acts while maintaining a distinctly personal voice. Its inclusion on Pest Productions’ 10‑year anniversary compilation further cemented the project’s standing within the label’s atmospheric roster.

With Monad (2017), CelephaĂŻs reached a new level of refinement. The album is often regarded as the project’s most cohesive and mature work, weaving together post‑metal weight, blackened ambience, and subtle progressive elements. Critics highlighted its sense of unity—each track functioning as a chapter in a larger emotional arc—and its ability to balance heaviness with serenity. The production is clearer and more expansive than earlier releases, allowing the intricate guitar layers and dynamic shifts to fully unfold.

Throughout its existence, CelephaĂŻs has remained deliberately minimalistic in presentation, focusing on the music rather than imagery or narrative framing. This restraint, combined with the project’s instrumental nature, has contributed to its enigmatic aura. Despite operating independently and without a full lineup, CelephaĂŻs has earned a dedicated following among listeners drawn to atmospheric, introspective black/post‑metal—music that speaks through texture, movement, and mood rather than words.
