Celestite is an instrumental atmospheric black metal project from Porto, created and performed entirely by JoĂŁo Pedro Roque, a prolific multi‑instrumentalist active across numerous Portuguese extreme‑music projects. Conceived as a space for pure instrumental expression, Celestite strips black metal down to its atmospheric essence, replacing vocals with expansive melodic phrasing, meditative repetition, and a strong sense of cosmic drift. Roque’s background in projects such as Agnoia, Despondent, Ill Omens, Svn ov Dk, and Throne of Misery informs the project’s emotional weight, but Celestite stands apart for its clarity, restraint, and focus on mood over aggression.
The debut EP Celestial Ritual (2018) introduced the project’s core identity: shimmering tremolo layers, slow‑rising harmonic structures, and a ritualistic sense of ascent. It established Celestite as a project concerned less with traditional black metal ferocity and more with atmosphere, contemplation, and the evocation of vast, unspoken landscapes. Roque’s approach emphasizes fluid composition and textural depth, allowing each piece to unfold gradually, like a natural phenomenon rather than a conventional song.
With Imperial Landscapes (2022), Celestite refined this vision into a more mature and cohesive form. The EP explores themes of cosmic solitude and inner expansion, weaving together airy leads, drifting ambient passages, and a sense of timelessness that aligns the project with the more meditative side of atmospheric black metal. The release highlights Roque’s ability to craft immersive environments without relying on vocals or narrative, instead using instrumental dynamics to guide emotional movement.
Across its work, Celestite remains a solitary, introspective project—an exploration of atmosphere as a language in itself. Roque channels his extensive experience in the Portuguese underground into a sound that is both expansive and intimate, offering instrumental black metal as a form of quiet revelation rather than confrontation.
