CMPT (stylized in capitals to visually echo the Cyrillic смрт, “death”) is one of the most striking and internationally visible Serbian black metal projects of the 2020s. Emerging from Pančevo in 2020, CMPT channels a uniquely Balkan form of black metal—rooted in death‑ritual symbolism, regional witchcraft traditions, and the darker strata of local folklore. The project’s sound is raw yet atmospheric, ritualistic yet violent, and unmistakably tied to the cultural and mythic soil of the Balkans.
The creative force behind CMPT is Vidak Lešina, a prolific multi‑instrumentalist deeply embedded in the Serbian and international underground. His work across All My Sins, Dead Shell of Universe, Terrörhammer, and numerous other projects informs CMPT’s hybrid identity: traditional black metal sharpened by dissonance, ritual ambience, and a distinctly regional melodic sensibility.
The debut EP Mrtvaja (2021) immediately set CMPT apart. Its title references a folkloric liminal zone—marshes, grave‑fields, and the “dead waters” where spirits linger. The music mirrors this: suffocating atmosphere, ritualistic pacing, and a sense of ancestral dread.
Three releases followed in rapid succession:
The full‑length Krv i pepeo (“Blood and Ash”) expanded the project’s scope, weaving together themes of death, witchcraft, and Balkan esoterica with a sharper, more aggressive sound. The album earned strong underground acclaim and positioned CMPT as one of the most promising new Serbian black metal acts.
In 2024, CMPT released its second full‑length, Na utrini, deepening its folkloric and ritualistic identity. The album title refers to a barren field or wasteland—another folkloric threshold space associated with spirits, curses, and nocturnal rites. Musically, it is darker, more atmospheric, and more compositionally ambitious than its predecessor.
