Corpus Vitreum was founded in Bonn in 2019 by multi‑instrumentalists Matheus Kuska and Sebastian Mirgeler, both formerly of Dying for Fun. From the beginning, the project embraced a highly atmospheric and emotionally charged form of post‑black metal, characterized by sweeping guitar layers, melancholic melodies, and a strong cinematic sensibility. Their music explores themes of decay, memory, and existential detachment, often framed through imagery of abandoned places, natural desolation, and the fragile tension between beauty and indifference. The duo’s collaborative dynamic—Kuska handling instrumentation and Mirgeler contributing vocals and additional composition—gives the project a cohesive yet multifaceted identity.

In 2021, Corpus Vitreum began unveiling a rapid succession of singles that introduced their sonic world piece by piece. Tracks such as Lunar Horizon, Behemoth of the North, Morbid Mind, and A Fragile Dawn showcased their ability to shift between shimmering atmospheric passages and heavier, more aggressive black metal surges. These early releases were noted for their emotional immediacy and their blend of melodic clarity with raw, expressive intensity. Thematically, the singles explored isolation, inner conflict, and the haunting pull of nostalgia, establishing the project’s lyrical and aesthetic foundations.

As the year progressed, the duo continued releasing material at an impressive pace. Songs like Old Wars, Beast of Misery, Steel Coffins, and March to Midgard expanded their palette with darker tones, martial rhythms, and a more pronounced sense of narrative. Hymn of the Hurting Moment and The Blackened Sea further deepened the project’s atmospheric scope, weaving sorrowful melodies with dense, enveloping soundscapes. By 2022, Corpus Vitreum had developed a recognizable signature: emotionally charged post‑black metal infused with cinematic ambience and a strong sense of storytelling.

Their first full‑length album, The Roots of: Corpus Vitreum (2022), served as both a culmination of their early work and a conceptual anchor for the project’s identity. The album was praised in underground circles for its cohesion, its emotional depth, and its ability to unify the themes explored across the preceding singles. Later that same year, the self‑titled full‑length Corpus Vitreum expanded their sound even further, offering a more polished and immersive experience. Critics highlighted the album’s balance between atmospheric serenity and blackened ferocity, as well as the duo’s skill in crafting evocative, narrative‑driven compositions.

Corpus Vitreum continues to operate independently, maintaining a steady creative output and cultivating a dedicated following within the atmospheric and post‑black metal community. Their music stands out for its emotional vulnerability, its sweeping sense of scale, and its ability to evoke vivid imagery of desolation, memory, and the quiet beauty found in ruin.
