Death Comes in Waves formed in 2013 in Recklinghausen, North Rhine‑Westphalia, beginning as a melodic death/thrash metal outfit before gradually evolving toward a darker, more atmospheric blend of melodic black/death metal. Their early material leaned heavily on sharp riffing, energetic rhythms, and a thrash‑infused edge, but over time the band embraced colder harmonies, blackened textures, and a more dramatic emotional tone.

The debut EP Stille der Einsamkeit (2017) marked the first major step in defining their identity, combining melancholic melodies with aggressive structures and introspective themes. Their breakthrough came with the full‑length Circle of Certainty (2020), a release praised for its tight musicianship, dynamic songwriting, and the seamless fusion of melodic death metal with blackened atmospheres. Reviews highlighted the album’s emotional depth, strong guitar work, and the band’s ability to balance melody with intensity.

With Not of This World (2022), Death Comes in Waves expanded their sound further, incorporating more atmospheric layering, darker tonal shifts, and a refined melodic sensibility. The album demonstrated a matured approach to composition, with a stronger emphasis on mood, pacing, and thematic cohesion. The addition of new members in the late 2010s and early 2020s strengthened the band’s technical foundation and contributed to their evolving style.

Active and independent, the band continues to push its melodic black/death hybrid forward, maintaining a strong presence in the German underground through consistent releases, lineup stability, and a clear artistic direction.
