Biography

Ekku is an Italian black metal project active in the underground since the early 2010s, known for a raw, abrasive, and deliberately unpolished sound that blends traditional black metal with elements of depressive and atmospheric styles. The project has maintained a low profile, with minimal public information and no strong social‑media presence, reinforcing its identity as an intentionally obscure, solitary act.

The earliest release, the Ekku demo (2011), established the project’s core aesthetic: lo‑fi production, distorted and distant vocals, and a guitar tone that leans toward bleak, repetitive riffing rather than technicality. The atmosphere is cold and oppressive, drawing from second‑wave black metal but filtered through a more introspective, depressive sensibility.

The full‑length In the Shadow of the Mountain (2013) expanded this foundation with longer compositions and a more immersive, atmospheric approach. The album revolves around themes of isolation, nature, and existential withdrawal, with a sound that alternates between harsh, primitive black metal passages and slower, mood‑driven sections. The production remains intentionally rough, emphasizing emotional immediacy over clarity.

Ekku’s later material, including splits and isolated tracks, continues this trajectory: raw, solitary black metal with a focus on atmosphere and emotional bleakness rather than speed or aggression. The project’s anonymity and minimal output have contributed to its cult status within the Italian underground, where it is recognized as part of the wave of early‑2010s projects that embraced lo‑fi, depressive, and atmospheric black metal with sincerity and restraint.
