Enid was founded in 1997 in Porta Westfalica, North Rhine‑Westphalia, emerging as one of Germany’s most distinctive contributors to epic and symphonic black metal. The project, led primarily by multi‑instrumentalist Martin Wiese, blended medieval atmospheres, orchestral arrangements, and black metal foundations into a sound deeply rooted in fantasy literature—especially Arthurian myth. Their early work stood out for its romantic, heroic tone, lush keyboard layers, and a strong narrative sensibility uncommon in the German scene at the time.

The self‑titled demo Enid (1997) introduced their medieval‑inspired aesthetic, but it was the debut full‑length Nachtgedanken (1998) that established Enid as a cult favorite. The album received high praise for its sweeping compositions, emotional depth, and the seamless fusion of black metal harshness with symphonic grandeur. Abschiedsreigen (2000) continued this trajectory, expanding the band’s orchestral palette and deepening its connection to mythic storytelling.

The EP Der Tag zur Nacht sich senkt… (2001) and the acclaimed full‑length Seelenspiegel (2002) marked the peak of Enid’s early era, showcasing intricate arrangements, expressive vocals, and a refined balance between metal and neoclassical elements. By Gradwanderer (2004), the band had shifted further toward symphonic metal, incorporating cleaner production and more elaborate instrumentation while retaining their characteristic medieval flair.

After several years of silence, Enid resurfaced with Munsalvaesche (2011), a conceptually rich album inspired by Arthurian legend and the Grail mythos. The record featured contributions from musicians associated with the German atmospheric and black metal underground, including guitarist Nostarion, and presented a more polished, cinematic sound. Despite its strong reception, the band appears to have dissolved quietly sometime after this release.

Enid remains a respected name in the German epic and symphonic black metal tradition—celebrated for its imaginative scope, emotional resonance, and the unique artistic vision of Martin Wiese.
