Eridu was founded in 2017 in Munich, Bavaria, with the explicit goal of creating what they call Oriental Extreme Metal—a fusion of melodic black/death metal with Middle Eastern scales, mythological concepts, and ancient Mesopotamian storytelling. Their music is built on a dramatic interplay of aggressive riffing, atmospheric melodies, and ritualistic rhythmic patterns, all tied together by lyrics rooted in Sumerian and Akkadian myth cycles.
Their debut full‑length Lugalbanda (2019) introduced this vision with a strong conceptual focus, weaving together themes of ancient kingship, divine conflict, and mythic heroism. The album was praised for its ambitious scope, dynamic songwriting, and the band’s ability to merge traditional extreme metal with Eastern‑inflected melodies.
In 2023 Eridu released the single Enuma Elish, followed by a full‑length album of the same name. This work expanded their mythological framework, drawing directly from the Babylonian creation epic. The album showcased a more refined production, deeper atmospheric layering, and a heightened sense of narrative cohesion. The interplay between harsh vocals, melodic leads, and ritualistic rhythms became even more pronounced, solidifying Eridu’s identity as one of the more distinctive voices in the German melodic black/death metal scene.
With a lineup composed of musicians active across various corners of the German underground, Eridu continues to evolve while remaining faithful to their core concept: extreme metal shaped by the myths, symbols, and sonic textures of ancient Mesopotamia.
