Evenfall was an Italian gothic/black metal band from Trieste, formed in 1994 and active until 2003. They were one of the earliest Italian acts to merge melodic black metal with gothic, darkwave, and symphonic elements, creating a hybrid sound that stood apart from both the Scandinavian tradition and the emerging Italian symphonic scene of the late 1990s.

Their debut Once in a Lifetime (1998) introduced this fusion clearly: harsh vocals and black metal riffing intertwined with female clean vocals, keyboards, and a strong gothic sensibility. The album’s atmosphere leaned toward melancholy and romantic darkness rather than pure aggression, positioning Evenfall within the European wave of gothic‑tinged extreme metal.

With Cumbersome (2000), the band shifted further into gothic metal, reducing the black metal elements and emphasizing melodic structures, clean vocals, and a more accessible, melancholic tone. This stylistic evolution distanced them from their extreme metal origins but strengthened their identity within the gothic metal movement of the early 2000s.

Evenfall disbanded in 2003, leaving behind a concise but influential discography that documented a rare Italian intersection of black metal roots, gothic aesthetics, and melodic experimentation. Their work remains a reference point for the hybrid gothic/black metal sound that briefly flourished in Italy at the turn of the millennium.
