Hyems—Latin for winter—was founded in 2000, originally under the name Hiems, before adopting the spelling Hyems to avoid confusion with the Italian solo project of the same name. Emerging from ErndtebrĂĽck and later relocating to Marburg, the band developed a melodic black metal sound rooted in cold atmospheres, sharp riffing, and a distinctly German sense of bleakness. Their earliest material drew heavily on Tolkien’s legendarium, but over time their lyrical focus shifted toward introspection, human failure, and existential decay.

The early demos of 2000 and 2004 established their raw foundation, culminating in the debut full‑length Antinomie (2007), which marked their transition into a more defined melodic black metal identity. Subsequent releases—Im Jetzt die Asche (2013), Devianz – Dem Menschen ein Wolf (2015), and Anatomie des Scheiterns (2020)—showcase a band increasingly focused on psychological themes, social fracture, and the anatomy of collapse. Their EP 1997 (2018) stands as a reflective interlude, revisiting formative influences with a colder, more mature tone.

Hyems have maintained a steady presence in the German underground, supported by compilation appearances in Legacy Magazine and Metalegion, which helped bring their melodic yet abrasive sound to a wider audience.

Hyems remain a steadfast presence in German melodic black metal—frostbitten in tone, introspective in theme, and shaped by more than two decades of evolution from Tolkien‑inspired beginnings to a mature, existentially charged sound.
