Millennium was an atmospheric gothic metal band from Almada, SetĂşbal, active briefly in the mid‑1990s and originally formed under the name Lacrimae before adopting the Millennium moniker in 1996. Their sound drew from the early European gothic metal tradition—melancholic melodies, ethereal female vocals, and a strong emphasis on dark romanticism—placing them among Portugal’s earliest contributors to the genre. The lineup featured Carla Simões on vocals, Pedro Pestana and LuĂs Lamelas on guitars, David Benasulin on bass, and Rui Veiga on keyboards, a formation that allowed the band to craft a richly atmospheric style blending gothic melancholy with metal’s heavier textures.

Their sole release, the 1997 demo Wilderness in White, became a minor cult artifact within the Portuguese underground. The recording showcased the band’s blend of somber melodic lines, keyboard‑driven ambience, and a sense of emotional fragility that aligned them with the gothic metal wave emerging across Europe at the time. Tracks such as “Wilderness in White,” “Dreamspheres,” and “One Last Waltz” revealed a band focused on mood and introspection rather than aggression, with arrangements that leaned toward the atmospheric and symphonic edges of the genre.

Despite their short lifespan, Millennium left a small but notable imprint through compilation appearances on PromĂşsica and High Radiation, which helped circulate their music beyond the local scene. Their dissolution came soon after the demo’s release, leaving Wilderness in White as their only recorded legacy—a snapshot of Portugal’s early gothic metal movement, marked by youthful ambition, emotional depth, and a sound that captured the era’s fascination with beauty, sorrow, and the spectral.
