Neman (Serbian for “monstrosity”) was a Novi Sad–based black metal project active from 2003 into the late 2000s, though the exact disbandment date is unknown. The band operated within the philosophical wing of Serbian black metal—less focused on raw aggression or pagan themes, more oriented toward introspection, existential questioning, and the darker dimensions of human thought. Their sound, as captured on their lone 2006 demo The Creation Curse, blended traditional black metal riffing with a reflective, sometimes experimental edge.
Neman’s lineup was fluid, with numerous musicians passing through the project—many of whom were active across a wide range of Novi Sad and Belgrade underground acts. This revolving‑door structure gave the band a hybrid identity: part black metal, part experimental collective, part philosophical workshop. Despite this, the core creative force was the duo of Aleksandra Vukošić and Alen Habek, whose contributions shaped the band’s only recorded output.
The project’s obscurity is typical of early‑2000s Vojvodina underground metal: limited releases, shifting lineups, and a strong DIY ethos. Yet Neman remains a notable node in the region’s network, especially given the later prominence of several members in other Serbian and international projects.
