Permutation is a melodic death/black metal band founded in 2020 in the Emsland region of Lower Saxony. The project began as a studio‑driven collaboration between guitarist/bassist/synth composer Thomas Robin and vocalist Volker Racho, both active in several underground German extreme metal acts. From the outset, the band focused on a hybrid sound that merges Scandinavian‑influenced melodic death metal with blackened aggression, atmospheric layering, and occasional acoustic textures.
Their first release, the “Lost” demo (2021), introduced their core aesthetic: sharp melodic riffing, harsh vocals, and a cold, modern production style. The demo helped establish their presence in the German underground and set the stage for a more ambitious full‑length.
Permutation’s debut album “Transience” (2023) marked a major step forward. Released through Apostasy Records as a limited digipak and vinyl edition, the album spans ten tracks and runs just over 41 minutes. Reviews praised its tight musicianship, dynamic songwriting, and the duo’s ability to balance blackened ferocity with melodic clarity. Critics highlighted the “wall of sound” effect created by staccato riffing and powerful drumming, as well as the album’s blend of extreme metal intensity with more unusual elements such as acoustic guitar integration. Listeners on Bandcamp described the record as a “masterpiece” for its well‑crafted fusion of blackened death metal and broader extreme metal influences.
The album’s thematic focus revolves around impermanence, existential struggle, and the tension between creation and decay—reflected in tracks like “A Feast for Crows,” “Arrow of Time,” “Lost in Transience,” and “Apostasy,” the latter also appearing on an Apostasy Records digital sampler in 2023.
Permutation continues to evolve, expanding into a full lineup with the addition of drummer Fjoelsvind in 2024, known for his work in Apallic and several other German extreme metal projects. With growing attention from underground reviewers and a strong debut album, the band has positioned itself as one of the notable newer acts in Germany’s melodic death/black metal landscape.
