Project Entropy emerged in 2009 from the ashes of Sacrasphemy, a German extreme metal band active since 2002. While Sacrasphemy leaned toward raw black/death metal, Project Entropy shifted decisively into a more ambitious symphonic black/death metal direction, incorporating orchestral arrangements, layered keyboards, and a conceptual focus on scientific dystopia, cosmic decay, and the mechanization of humanity. Their music blended harsh riffing with atmospheric keyboards, alternating between blackened aggression and melodic, almost cinematic passages.

Their sole full‑length, “Theory of Devolution” (2009), stands as the band’s defining statement. The album explores themes of biological regression, technological collapse, and the philosophical implications of evolution reversed—delivered through a mixture of harsh dual vocals, tremolo‑driven guitars, and dense symphonic textures. The record’s sound reflects the late‑2000s wave of symphonic extreme metal, drawing on both European black metal grandeur and death metal heaviness. Although independently released, it circulated widely in underground circles and was noted for its conceptual cohesion and the musicians’ tight performance, especially considering the project’s short lifespan.

Project Entropy’s lineup consisted entirely of former Sacrasphemy members, joined by musicians active in related projects such as Мрак, Nebular Moon, Abaddon, and Synesthesy. This shared background gave the band a unified musical identity, rooted in the German and Eastern‑European‑influenced black/death underground. Despite the promise shown on Theory of Devolution, the band ceased activity shortly afterward, with members returning to their other projects.

Today, Project Entropy is remembered as a brief but intriguing chapter in the German symphonic extreme metal scene—an ambitious, concept‑driven project whose single album remains a cult artifact for collectors of underground symphonic black/death metal.
