Soul in Cage emerged from the Belgrade underground in 2003, forming during a period when the Serbian extreme metal scene was undergoing a surge of new bands blending death, thrash, and black metal influences. From the beginning, the group embraced a violent, abrasive aesthetic—both musically and lyrically—drawing on themes of brutality, death, and raw aggression. Their sound combined sharp thrash riffing, death‑metal heaviness, and blackened atmospheres, creating a hybrid style that aligned them with the harsher side of the Serbian scene.

The band’s first recorded output, Demo 2006, circulated through local tape‑trading circles and helped establish their reputation for uncompromising extremity. The material was noted for its dense guitar work, harsh vocal delivery, and a rhythm section that shifted between thrash‑driven speed and death‑metal weight. After several years of lineup changes and live activity, Soul in Cage released their only full‑length album, Slavery, in 2013 through Miner Records. The album showcased a more mature and cohesive sound, with tighter songwriting and a darker, more oppressive atmosphere. Reviews from underground zines highlighted the band’s ability to merge multiple extreme metal subgenres without losing intensity, praising the album’s raw production and feral energy.

Despite the strength of Slavery, the band’s activity became increasingly sporadic afterward. Members were involved in numerous other Serbian extreme metal projects—some highly active—which contributed to Soul in Cage gradually fading from public view. With no official breakup announced and no confirmed releases after 2013, the band’s current status remains unclear. Nevertheless, their work—particularly Slavery—stands as a document of Belgrade’s mid‑2000s extreme metal movement, capturing the harsh, unfiltered spirit of the era.
