Spirit of Destruction formed in Belgrade in 2000, emerging during a fertile period for the Serbian underground when melodic black metal bands were beginning to refine a more atmospheric, emotionally charged sound. Although their existence under the original name was brief, the band quickly developed a reputation for combining traditional black metal aggression with melodic guitar interplay and a strong sense of dramatic tension. Their music leaned toward the Scandinavianâinfluenced melodic black metal of the late 1990s, but with a distinctly local character shaped by the Belgrade scene’s rawer production values and DIY ethos.
The group’s only recorded output as Spirit of Destruction was Demo 2003, a release that circulated primarily through local tapeâtrading networks and underground compilations. The demo showcased the band’s early songwriting approach: dualâguitar harmonies, sharp tremolo lines, midâtempo atmospheric passages, and harsh vocals that carried a sense of emotional weight rather than pure aggression. Their contribution of the track “Bol” to Demo Express 202 (Rock Express Records, 2003) helped introduce them to a wider Yugoslav metal audience, placing them alongside other rising Serbian acts of the era.
In 2003, the band underwent a full transformation, changing their name to Hetera and continuing their activity under that banner until 2012, with a later revival beginning in 2018. The shift marked a new creative direction and a more mature identity, but the Spirit of Destruction era remains the foundation of their soundâraw, melodic, and rooted in the emotional intensity characteristic of early 2000s Serbian black metal.
Though shortâlived, Spirit of Destruction left a small but meaningful imprint on the Belgrade underground, remembered for their role in shaping what would later become Hetera’s musical path.
