Stag’s Yarrow is a doom/post‑metal band formed in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2023. Emerging from the city’s small but steadily growing extreme‑metal underground, the trio channels a bleak, slow‑burning sound shaped by themes of death, decay, and the weight of memory. Their music blends the heaviness of modern doom with the expansive dynamics of post‑metal, favouring long, deliberate builds, crushing low‑end, and anguished vocal delivery.

The band began releasing material in 2024 with the single Funeral, a stark introduction to their somber aesthetic. This was followed by The Old House and The Lictors in 2025, each expanding their palette with denser arrangements and more atmospheric layering. Their debut full‑length, Sutures (2025), marked a significant step forward, presenting a cohesive vision built around slow, deliberate tension and emotionally charged crescendos.

Stag’s Yarrow is anchored by bassist Rowan Wanhalla, drummer Junior Grant (also of Forsworn), and guitarist/vocalist Hamish Clark, known for his work in Depredam and as a live member of Grym Rhymney. Together, they craft a sound that is both intimate and monolithic, rooted in doom’s traditional weight but shaped by the introspective, cinematic qualities of post‑metal.

Still early in their career but already defined by a clear artistic identity, Stag’s Yarrow continue to develop their voice within New Zealand’s atmospheric and doom‑leaning metal landscape.
