Sterbenswille emerged in 2012 from Altötting, shaping a sound rooted in the emotional intensity of post‑black metal. From the beginning, the project has focused on themes of inner collapse, psychological struggle, and existential sorrow, channeling these through a blend of atmospheric black metal, post‑metal textures, and melancholic melodic structures. Their music is defined by expressive guitar layering, anguished vocal delivery, and a sense of emotional weight that permeates every composition.
For nearly a decade, Sterbenswille operated as a personal and introspective project under the creative direction of S.J., who handled guitars and lyrics from 2012 to 2023. His writing established the project’s thematic identity: bleak, reflective, and deeply rooted in emotional authenticity. The early years were marked by experimentation and refinement, gradually shaping the project’s signature blend of atmospheric melancholy and blackened intensity.
A major shift occurred in 2021 when a new lineup formed around A.L. (vocals), M.L. (guitars), and A.K. (drums), bringing renewed energy and a more collaborative dynamic. Their arrival marked a turning point, leading to a more polished and expansive sound while preserving the emotional rawness that defines Sterbenswille. The addition of J.L. on bass in 2022 completed the modern formation, giving the band a stronger rhythmic foundation and allowing for more dynamic arrangements.
The project began unveiling its new era with the singles Chaos Inside and Nocturnal Thoughts in 2023. Both tracks showcased a refined production style and a heightened focus on atmosphere, weaving depressive black metal elements with post‑metal crescendos and introspective melodic passages. These releases set the stage for the band’s first full‑length album.
Dunkelheit (2023) marked Sterbenswille’s full realization as a post‑black metal force. The album explores themes of despair, emotional fragmentation, and the struggle for inner clarity, delivered through sweeping guitar work, layered atmospheres, and a vocal performance steeped in anguish. It stands as the culmination of the band’s evolution, merging the raw emotional core of the early years with the expanded sonic palette of the new lineup.
Sterbenswille continues to develop its identity within the German underground, maintaining a strong emotional focus and a commitment to exploring the darker corners of the human psyche through atmospheric and expressive black metal.
