Strife Machine is a long‑running solo project from Dunedin, active since 2013 and shaped entirely by the work of its sole member, Null, who handles all instruments and vocals. From the beginning the project has operated in the margins of New Zealand’s extreme‑metal underground, releasing a relentless stream of demos, EPs, splits, and full‑lengths that trace a raw, unfiltered descent into depressive black metal and cold ambient minimalism. The sound is defined by lo‑fi textures, distant screams, repetitive hypnotic riffs, and an atmosphere steeped in themes of suicide, mental illness, winter isolation, and misanthropy.
Rather than pursuing polish or conventional structure, Strife Machine embraces a prolific, almost diaristic approach to creation. The year 2014 alone saw a cascade of demos—Demo 2014, Glass Shard Crystal, Radiant Guilt and Agony, Schizophreniform, and Ethereal Death—each capturing a different facet of Null’s bleak, introspective vision. This pace continued into 2015 with EPs, demos, and the first full‑length, Directive of Suffering, followed by the more expansive Selferadication, which became one of the project’s defining early statements.
Across the following years Strife Machine continued to evolve without abandoning its core aesthetic. Releases such as Psychiatric Espionage (2016), Absolution (2017), The Human Dragon (2019), and With Reckless Abandon (2020) expanded the project’s emotional and atmospheric range while maintaining its raw, solitary character. Compilations like Atrophy – 2014, Dreams of Life Denied (2016), and The Countless Severances (2020) document the project’s vast output and shifting phases. Later works—including the EP Man Destroying Himself (2021) and the demo South of Salem (2022)—show a continued commitment to exploring psychological collapse and existential decay through stark, uncompromising soundscapes.
Active for more than a decade and entirely independent, Strife Machine remains one of New Zealand’s most prolific and deeply personal depressive black metal projects, defined by isolation, persistence, and an unbroken dedication to documenting inner turmoil through raw, atmospheric extremity.
