Tethyal emerged from Novi Sad in 2013 as a sludge/doom‑leaning project before evolving into one of the more abrasive and genre‑fluid acts in the Serbian underground. Their early sound—captured on the 2016 demo Carnal. Lust. Eternal.—was rooted in slow, suffocating sludge riffs, bleak atmospheres, and a raw, unpolished heaviness typical of the Vojvodina DIY scene. Over time, however, the band shifted toward a harsher, more aggressive hybrid of black metal and crust punk, embracing faster tempos, sharper riffing, and a confrontational sonic identity.

This stylistic transformation coincided with lineup changes and the growing influence of members active in other extreme metal and punk projects across Serbia. The addition of multi‑instrumentalist and vocalist Nemanja brought new textures—saxophone, clarinet, and mouth harp—expanding the band’s palette and giving their later material an experimental edge. Meanwhile, guitarist Alen Habek, a veteran of numerous Novi Sad and Belgrade underground bands, became a central creative force, shaping Tethyal’s shift toward blackened crust and dissonant, chaotic structures.

Their long‑awaited full‑length Sloboda (2024) marked the culmination of this evolution. The album blends crust‑driven aggression with black metal ferocity, layered with moments of atmospheric tension and unexpected instrumental flourishes. Its themes revolve around existential struggle, social decay, and the violent pursuit of liberation—delivered through a raw, cathartic performance aesthetic. Underground listeners praised the album for its intensity, authenticity, and refusal to conform to genre boundaries.

Tethyal has also contributed to the broader Serbian heavy music landscape through compilation appearances, most notably the track “Kanap” on Trip to Serbia (Weedian, 2025), which helped introduce their sound to an international stoner/doom audience despite their stylistic shift away from that genre.

Operating independently and maintaining a strong DIY ethos, Tethyal continues to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in the abrasive, boundary‑pushing spirit of the Serbian underground.
