The Unbending is an atmospheric doom/sludge metal duo formed in 2017 in Berlin, channeling a sound rooted in weight, tension, and slow‑burn emotional collapse. Their music blends the suffocating heaviness of sludge with the brooding melancholy of doom, shaped by thick, dragging riffs, cavernous vocals, and a stark, desolate atmosphere. The project’s approach is minimalistic yet expressive, relying on raw textures and deliberate pacing rather than ornamentation, creating songs that feel like long, crushing exhalations.
Their debut demo Prologue (2020) introduced this aesthetic with unfiltered grit—bleak, heavy, and intimate in its simplicity. The follow‑up EP Of Broken Chains (2022) expanded the project’s emotional and dynamic range, weaving in more atmospheric passages while retaining the oppressive weight at the core of their sound. In 2023, the single Conquer the Storm pushed further into dramatic tension, pairing doom‑laden riffs with a more forceful rhythmic drive.
The Unbending is built around the creative partnership of guitarist Carla Betancourt and vocalist/drummer Till Bachmann, both also active in Mriodom. Their synergy defines the project’s identity: slow, crushing, atmospheric metal shaped by a stark emotional palette and a commitment to raw, unembellished expression.
