Thulcandra is a German melodic black/death metal band founded in 2003 by guitarist/vocalist Steffen Kummerer together with guitarist JĂĽrgen Zintz and drummer Jonas Baumgartl. Conceived as a tribute to the cold, melodic ferocity of mid‑’90s Swedish blackened death metal, the band drew direct inspiration from Dissection, Sacramentum and Unanimated, fusing razor‑sharp tremolo riffs, frosty harmonies and a distinctly melancholic atmosphere. Their name is taken from a Darkthrone demo, itself referencing C. S. Lewis’ novel “Out of the Silent Planet,” where Thulcandra is the name for Earth—the “silent planet”—hinting at the band’s fascination with darkness, death and metaphysical themes.

In 2004/2005 Thulcandra recorded the demo “Perishness Around Us,” but before it could be released, tragedy struck: guitarist JĂĽrgen Zintz committed suicide in 2005. The loss halted all activity and pushed the band into hiatus, with the unreleased demo becoming a kind of ghostly prelude to their later work. Years later, Kummerer revisited those early recordings and ideas, which eventually led to Thulcandra’s reactivation in 2008. With brothers Sebastian and Tobias Ludwig joining on guitars and bass, and session drummer Seraph handling drums, the band rebuilt itself and prepared to finally bring their vision to full length.

Thulcandra’s debut album, “Fallen Angel’s Dominion” (2010), released through Napalm Records, immediately positioned them as one of the most convincing heirs to the Dissection legacy. The record’s icy melodies, dual‑guitar interplay and harsh yet articulate vocals drew strong praise from critics and fans, with many reviews highlighting both the authenticity of the Swedish‑influenced sound and the band’s ability to inject their own personality. The inclusion of a cover of “The Somberlain” underlined their roots while reinforcing the sense that Thulcandra were not mere imitators but dedicated torchbearers of a nearly lost style.

The follow‑up, “Under a Frozen Sun” (2011), refined their approach with more dynamic songwriting and an even more desolate, wintry atmosphere. Reviews often singled out the album’s balance between aggression and melody, noting how the band deepened their emotional range without sacrificing intensity. “Ascension Lost” (2015) expanded the palette further, weaving in more intricate arrangements and a stronger sense of narrative flow across the record. By this point, Thulcandra were widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading melodic black/death metal acts, consistently praised in webzines and print magazines for their ability to channel the spirit of the ’90s while maintaining modern production standards and tight musicianship.

After a brief lull in studio output, Thulcandra returned with “A Dying Wish” (2021), a record that many reviews described as both a culmination and a renewal. The album showcased matured songwriting, memorable lead work and a somber, elegiac tone that resonated strongly with long‑time followers. “Hail the Abyss” (2023) pushed their sound to an even more confident level, earning enthusiastic critical reception for its powerful production, sharpened riffcraft and the band’s unwavering commitment to cold, melodic extremity. Alongside their studio work, Thulcandra have built a solid live reputation across Europe and beyond, often sharing stages and touring in connection with Kummerer’s other main band, Obscura, and appearing at festivals where their precise, atmospheric performances reinforce their status as a premier melodic black/death metal act.

In 2016, the long‑shelved demo “Perishness Around Us” finally surfaced as an official release, giving fans a glimpse into the band’s earliest incarnation and the raw foundations of their later sound. The live album “Live Demise” (2024) documents the band’s onstage power, capturing their frosty melodies and tight execution in a concert setting and underlining how their material thrives in front of an audience. Throughout their career, Thulcandra have remained faithful to themes of death, darkness and Satanism, wrapping them in a distinctly wintry, nocturnal aesthetic that has become their signature.
