Thulr is a German one‑man melodic black metal project founded in 2002 by multi‑instrumentalist Morten Basse in Kiel, Schleswig‑Holstein. Rooted in the atmospheric and folk‑infused branch of black metal, Thulr’s sound blends cold, melodic riffing with pagan and maritime themes, drawing heavily from Northern European myth, nature, and the lore of the sea. The project’s aesthetic is shaped by early European history, pagan traditions, and the rugged landscapes of the North, often evoking windswept coasts, ancient tales, and the solitude of seafarers.

The debut demo Forsitesland (2004) introduced Thulr’s signature style: melodic black metal enriched with folk elements and epic atmospheres. Reviews highlighted the project’s affinity with classic pagan metal influences such as Bathory and Falkenbach, while maintaining a raw, personal approach. The demo’s concept revolves around Helgoland—known mythologically as “Forsitesland”—and several tracks explore the island’s legends and North Sea imagery. Critics noted the strong sense of place and the evocative storytelling embedded in the compositions.

In 2009, Thulr released The Seafarer, a second demo that further refined the project’s maritime and mythological identity. The material showcased more mature songwriting, deeper folk undertones, and a stronger narrative focus, reinforcing Thulr’s reputation as a solitary but distinctive voice within the German underground. Compilation appearances on Det Germanske Folket – Ureuropa (2005) and Pagan Battle Tunes Vol. 1 (2007) helped introduce the project to a wider pagan and folk‑black metal audience.

Thulr later collaborated with Syrgðr SkĂłgr for a split release in 2014, followed by the split ’t warrt vertellt in 2016, both of which expanded the project’s thematic palette while maintaining its core melodic and atmospheric identity. The compilation 2014–2017 (2018) gathered material from this period, offering a cohesive look at Thulr’s evolution across various recordings.

Despite remaining unsigned and operating independently, Thulr has maintained a steady presence in the underground through consistent quality, thematic depth, and Morten’s dedication to crafting immersive, myth‑laden soundscapes. The project stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of solitary, atmospheric black metal shaped by folklore, nature, and personal vision.
